The Committee Meeting and Sophistication Has a Sidekick

Two arrangements walked into my studio that could not be more different from each other, and both of them surprised me.

One was colorful, opinionated, and ran completely over schedule. The other was minimal, graceful, and brought a garlic stem as its secret weapon. That's Sogetsu for you. You never quite know what's going to walk through the door.

Come take a look.

The Committee Meeting

Nobody agreed on anything, and somehow it came out perfect.

Ikebana Arrangement - The Committee Meeting

The lotus called the meeting. The dahlias showed up in hot pink, because of course they did. The veronica brought the agenda nobody read. The open lotus in the corner was already three steps ahead. Nobody agreed on anything, the meeting ran long, and somehow the arrangement came out perfect.

Classic Sogetsu. I just showed up with scissors.

Sophistication Has a Sidekick

Three elegant callas, and a garlic stem with other plans.

Ikebana Arrangement - Sophistication Has a Sidekick

Three elegant callas walked in looking effortlessly beautiful. And then, a garlic stem. Reaching further than anyone, going places nobody expected, completely unbothered.

In Sogetsu, the most unexpected element is usually the one that makes the whole thing work. This one feels light, airy, and a little bit cheeky, just like a wink from across the room.

Quick Ikebana Tip

Sogetsu Was the Rebel. Most ikebana schools in the early 20th century kept the art form formal, traditional, and strictly rule-bound.

Then in 1927, Sofu Teshigahara founded Sogetsu with one radical idea, that anyone, anywhere, with any material, could practice ikebana.

It was a revolution in a vase. And it changed everything.
